Home Birth Midwife on the Main Line, PA
Main Line families are choosing something different.
Not the hospital clock. Not the standard protocol. Not a room full of strangers making decisions about a body that isn't theirs.
They're choosing home.
Cardinal Birth Midwifery has been serving families across the Philadelphia region since 2013 — Lower Merion, Bryn Mawr, Haverford, Wynnewood, Ardmore, Villanova, Gladwyne, Devon. We come to you. We work around your life. And we don't leave until you and your baby are steady.

Birth Advocacy
We are not just a midwifery practice. We are an advocacy group.
You have the right to informed consent. You have the right to refuse. You have the right to choose who is in that room when your baby comes.
We help you exercise those rights — especially when the system pushes back.
Functional Wellness
Preparing for pregnancy, navigating gestation, recovering postpartum. We support all of it with holistic, evidence-rooted care — nutrition, breastfeeding, whole-family wellness plans grounded in traditional practice.
About Abigail Iovine
I'm Abby. I founded Cardinal Birth in 2013 after five years of apprenticeship under local midwifery elders.
I'm a mother of ten. Four hospital births. Six at home — three with a midwife, three unassisted. I am not theorizing about what birth can look like when it's left alone. I know.
I've attended births across this region for over a decade. I bring emergency preparedness, deep experience, and the kind of calm that only comes from having seen a lot of births — including my own.
You are the lead in your care. My job is to make sure you stay that way.
Why Main Line Families Choose Cardinal Birth
Not for what we do. For what we don't.
We don't impose timelines. We don't coerce. We don't treat your pregnancy like a liability to be managed or your labor like a problem to be solved.
We show up as partners. Prepared, experienced, and clear about whose birth this is.
Abigail Iovine — founder of Cardinal Birth, mother of ten — has given birth six times at home in this same region. Three with a midwife. Three unassisted. She is not someone who learned about birth from a textbook. She lived it. Repeatedly. In the same communities she now serves.
Her training spanned five years under local midwifery elders in the traditional apprenticeship model. She has been attending births professionally since 2013.
She knows what she's doing. And she knows what it feels like to be the one on the other side.
On Legal Status in Pennsylvania
Cardinal Birth is a traditional midwifery practice. Not state-licensed. Our work is rooted in faith, tradition, and education — not state-regulated medicine.
We are transparent about this with every family we serve. Pennsylvania's legal landscape for traditional midwives is complicated — and we navigate it openly. You can read more about it on Abby's Substack.
You have the right to choose who attends your birth. We believe that without apology.
